Elevator Pitch
The Motley Kids are Very Hungry! We’re going to make some caterpillars and go looking for a snack. Come join us in this craft-along session!
This Craft Makes:
An upcycled sock caterpillar using plastic grocery bags as stuffing.
We’ve also done this with polyfill (Attached)

Supplies:
You will need:
- A sock
We suggest a kid’s crew sock that’s clean and doesn’t have any holes, but that also has lost its mate - 6 to 8 plastic grocery bagss
Again, they should be clean, but holes don’t matter
You can also use newspaper for a crunchy effect
If you have polyfill or stuffng lying around, go for it - String or twine or yarn
Rubber bands will also do - A pipe cleaner
- Markers
You may also want:
- Hot glue or fabric glue and bling for decorating
- Googly Eyes
- Fabric scraps
Steps to Make It
- Crumple your grocery bags into individual balls
- Push them into the sock in a line (this is why a kid’s crew sock works best)
If all you have are Big Kid socks you might have to use a couple bags per ball - Tie off the end of the sock with string
Use a surgeon’s knot to avoid slipping - Find the space between the last ball and the second-to-last ball and tie that one with string
- Keep going until you get to the head
- Add pipe cleaner antennae and googly eyes
- Decorate with markers! You may use any other bling you like as well.
