Suncatchers – Nature

Elevator Pitch

The Motley Kids are on the road! This week we’re celebrating spring (we hope) with found nature suncatchers!

This Craft Makes:

A suncatcher with natural items inside.

Supplies:

You will need:

  • 2 small paper plates
  • Wax paper
  • School glue
  • Tape
  • Paintbrush or sponge if you don’t like sticky fingers
  • Scissors
  • Hole Punch
  • String or twine
  • Flat(tish) things found outside
  • Sticks and twigs

Steps to Make It

  1. Cut the middle of your paper plates out, leaving the raised portion intact
To do this the easy way, cut a slit through the raised portion.
To do it the hard way, fold the plate a bit and cut the middle, then cut out from there.
  2. If you used the “cut a slit” method then you will need to tape the bottom plate together on the BACK side
  3. Apply a thin layer of glue to the FRONT side of the plate
  4. Take a sheet of wax paper a little bigger than your plate and lay it over the top of the plate
  5. Use your other plate to push the wax paper down so it’s sealed against the bottom plate. Set the top plate aside.
  6. Smudge a thickish layer of glue (enough to see) across the whole layer of wax paper (all the way up to the edges of the plate)
  7. Press your found flat things into the glue. It’s okay if they don’t stick completely.
  8. Lay another sheet of wax paper a little bigger than your plate on top of the first.
  9. Apply a thin layer of glue to the BACK side of your other plate
  10. Push the top plate down onto the bottom plate and make sure all the bits are stuck together tightly.
  11. Trim off the extra wax paper
  12. Punch one hole in the top and 3-4 in the bottom of your suncatcher
  13. Make a loop of twine and attach to the top of your suncatcher
  14. Loop twine through the holes in the bottom, then attach some sticks to hang down
  15. Hold up to the light for a nature silhouette!
