Elevator Pitch
The Motley Kids are visiting the west wing of the Beast’s castle! In this craft-along we’ll be making our own Enchanted Rose in a dome!
This craft will need you to have your Responsible Adult present, as we’ll be asking you to cut with sharp scissors, use the oven, and (if you have one) use a hot glue gun. This is also a messy craft (we’re using permanent markers), so cover up your workspace and your crafting clothes!
This Craft Makes:
This is the description of the craft (with pictures)
Supplies:
Your Adult will Need:
- Sharp scissors and a kitchen knife
- A toaster or regular oven pre-heated to 325-350 degrees
- A tray for the toaster oven, lined with parchment paper or aluminum foil
- Hot pads
- Two large metal spoons
- If you have one, a hot glue gun
You will need:
- A clean, empty 2-liter bottle with the label removed.
- You can use cooking oil on a paper towel to get rid of the label adhesive.
- If there are expiration dates stamped on the bottle, use rubbing alcohol (if you have it) to remove them or color over the stamps with a dry-erase marker and wipe off.
- A plastic takeout container lid (#6 recycling plastic) — in a pinch, a Solo cup will do, although they don’t shrink quite as nicely
- A stick (from outside) about 1/8 to 1/4″ thick and about 6-8″ long
- If you don’t have a hot glue gun: craft glue or tacky glue
- Modeling or air-dry clay (Play-doh will work in a pinch)
Don’t have any? We’ve got a quick recipe for some! - Sharpies or other permanent markers
- A square of fabric or wrapping paper about 10 inches on a side
You may also want:
- Green pipe cleaner
- Sequins or glitter
- Ribbon trim
Steps to Make It
Adults:
- Pre-heat the oven to 325-250 degrees
- Using a knife or sharp scissors, cut the 2 liter bottle apart just above the place where the bottom seam is
- You can even up the edges of both pieces once they’re separated but try to keep it flat
- Set this aside for now.
Kids:
- Using Sharpies, draw and color a flower on the flat part of the takeout container lid.
- You or your adult should cut out the flower very carefully.
Adults:
- Line a cookie sheet or toaster tray with aluminum foil or parchment paper. Put the flower on it.
- Bake your flower for 1-3 minutes (no more) in the oven.
If you watch, it will curl up and look like it’s going to turn into a ball, and then flatten out again. Once it’s flat it’s done.
Get your spoons ready! - Take the HOT flower out of the oven. BEFORE it can cool, pick it up up ON the liner and place it on one spoon. Use the other spoon to press down (use a little foil or paper to prevent sticking) and curl the petals up. Adults: Your kid can do this step if you think they’re ready.
- Let your flower cool. You can turn off the oven.
Kids:
- If you have a pipe cleaner, then you can wind it around your stick. These flowers are HEAVY so a pipe cleaner alone won’t hold it.
- Use hot glue or craft glue to glue your flower to one end of your stick.
If you’re in a hurry and using craft glue, transparent tape will help hold your flower short term. - Turn the base of the 2-liter bottle upside-down (so the lumpy bottom points up)
- If you HAVE hot glue, you can use a pile of hot glue to attach the other end of the stick to the base of the bottle
Otherwise, make a mound of air-dry clay and put your stick in it to hold it upright. You MAY need to let this dry before you assemble your final dome. - Cut a slit from one side of your fabric or wrapping paper to the middle. Wrap it around the base of your stick and let it drape all around the base of the bottle.
- Use modeling clay to make a knob over the spout of the bottle. Decorate it with sequins or gemstones if you like.
- Once everything is dry, slide the top of the bottle over the base to assemble your dome.
You can glue ribbon trim around the bottom if you like.
